What it is

Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession focused on how you move. Your physiotherapist assesses joints, muscles, nerves and movement patterns, then builds a plan of hands-on treatment and exercise designed around your goals. The aim is to reduce pain, restore function and help you understand your own recovery.

Common reasons people seek it

  • Back, neck and postural pain
  • Shoulder, knee, hip and ankle injuries
  • Post-surgical and post-fracture rehabilitation
  • Sports and repetitive-strain injuries
  • Balance, walking and mobility concerns
  • Motor vehicle accident (MVA) and workplace (WSIB) injuries

Your first appointment

  • A conversation about your history, symptoms and what you want to get back to.
  • A physical assessment of movement, strength and joint mechanics.
  • A clear explanation of findings in plain language.
  • Initial treatment where appropriate, plus a starting home program.

Methods that may be used

  • Manual therapy and joint mobilization
  • Therapeutic and progressive exercise prescription
  • Soft tissue release and myofascial techniques
  • Modalities such as TENS, ultrasound or heat and ice
  • Education, pacing and activity modification
  • Home program with follow-up and progression

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No referral is required to see a physiotherapist in Ontario. Some insurance plans do ask for one before reimbursing, so it is worth checking your policy.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being assessed — shorts or a tank top are often helpful.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on your condition, goals and how your body responds. Your physiotherapist will discuss an estimated plan after your assessment and adjust as you progress.
Do you handle MVA and WSIB claims?
Yes. We support motor vehicle accident and WSIB claims and can guide you through the paperwork.
